A week in Cancun is enough to see a lot without rushing, as long as you don't try to cram every famous day trip in. This itinerary mixes one island day, one jungle adventure, one ruins day and plenty of beach time. Swap days around to match the weather.
Before you start: the rules of this itinerary
- No adventures on arrival or departure days. Flights get delayed and checkout times are tight.
- Long and short days alternate, so you don't come home exhausted.
- Big trips go early in the week, so you can reschedule if the weather changes.
Day 1: Arrive and settle in
Check in, swim, walk the beach. In the evening, watch the sunset over the lagoon (Cancun's sea faces east, so the sun sets on the lagoon side). Get an early night.
Day 2: Isla Mujeres
Take the ferry or a catamaran to Isla Mujeres. Rent a golf cart, drive to Punta Sur for the views, then spend the afternoon at Playa Norte. Stay for sunset if you can, then head back for dinner.
Day 3: Jungle adventure + Puerto Morelos
Book a morning jungle combo on the Ruta de los Cenotes: an ATV ride, ziplines, a cenote swim and a tequila tasting. You're back by the afternoon. If you have energy, spend the evening in Puerto Morelos for seafood by the beach.
On our ATV, Ziplines, Cenote & Tequila tour, transportation from Cancun and Puerto Morelos is included, and booking 60+ days ahead halves the regular price.

Day 4: Beach and pool day
Do nothing. Seriously. You'll need it before the long day tomorrow.
Day 5: Chichén Itzá, a cenote and Valladolid
Leave early. Visit Chichén Itzá before the crowds and heat, swim at a nearby cenote such as Ik Kil, and stop in Valladolid for lunch and a walk through the colourful streets. It's a long day: around two and a half hours each way.
Day 6: Sea day (snorkel or relax)
Choose one:
- Snorkeling at MUSA or on the reef
- Whale shark tour if you're visiting roughly late spring to September
- A beach club in Playa del Carmen or on the Hotel Zone
In the evening, go downtown for dinner at Parque de las Palapas or Mercado 28.
Day 7: Slow morning and departure
Pack, enjoy a last swim, visit the Museo Maya or El Rey ruins if your flight is late, then head to the airport.

For families with young kids
Drop Chichén Itzá or replace it with a cenote morning and the Museo Maya. See Cancun with kids.
On a budget
Use the R-1 bus, take the regular ferry to Isla Mujeres, eat downtown and book adventures early for the best price. See Cancun on a budget.
In rainy or sargassum season
Move beach days around and lean on inland activities like cenotes and jungle tours. See our sargassum guide and rainy day ideas.
