Rain in Cancun rarely lasts all day. In the rainy season (roughly May/June to October) a typical pattern is a heavy shower that comes and goes, often in the afternoon. So a "rainy day" plan is usually about the next few hours, not the whole holiday. Here are good options, indoors and out.

Check official weather warnings first. Electrical storms, tropical storms and hurricane alerts are different from normal tropical rain, and outdoor activities may be changed or cancelled for safety.

Indoors in Cancun

1. Museo Maya de Cancún

Air-conditioned galleries with Mayan artefacts, plus the San Miguelito archaeological site in the garden for when the rain stops.

2. Interactive Aquarium

In the Hotel Zone, with marine life exhibits. Easy with kids.

3. Cooking class

Learn to make salsas, tortillas and Yucatán dishes. You get lunch out of it.

4. Tequila or mezcal tasting

A covered bar, a guide and a few glasses of agave. Perfect for a wet afternoon.

5. Spa afternoon

Many resorts and day spas offer Mayan-inspired treatments. Book early on rainy days; everyone has the same idea.

6. Shopping at La Isla and Plaza Kukulcán

Covered or partly covered malls in the Hotel Zone with restaurants and shops.

7. Downtown markets

Mercado 28 is mostly covered and good for souvenirs and lunch. Wander downtown when the shower passes.

8. A show at night

Coco Bongo and other evening shows aren't affected by the weather.

Outdoors (yes, really)

9. Swim in a cenote

You're going to get wet anyway. Cave and semi-open cenotes are sheltered by rock, and the water is the same in any weather. Avoid open water during electrical storms. See our 15 cenotes near Cancun.

10. Ride an ATV in the mud

Light rain turns jungle trails into a muddy playground. Many guests say the rainy-season ride is the most fun: wear old clothes and bring a change. Read our ATV guide.

11. Zipline under the canopy

Jungle ziplines are partly sheltered by the trees. Operators stop ziplines during lightning, so check before you go.

12. Chichén Itzá on a cloudy day

Clouds keep the temperature down at Chichén Itzá, which can be brutal in full sun. Bring a light rain jacket and good shoes for wet stone.

13. Botanical garden in Puerto Morelos

Forest trails under the trees, with fewer visitors on grey days. See our Puerto Morelos guide.

14. Isla Mujeres between showers

If the ferry is running and the sea is calm, a cloudy day on the island is still lovely, and cooler for a golf-cart ride.

15. A long lunch with a view

Find a covered terrace by the lagoon or the sea and watch the storm roll through. It's part of the tropical experience.

How to plan around rain

  1. Check the hourly forecast, not the daily icon. "Rain" often means a short shower.
  2. Plan outdoor activities in the morning in the rainy season.
  3. Keep one flexible day in your itinerary to swap plans.
  4. Pack a light rain jacket and quick-dry clothes.
  5. Know your operator's policy for weather changes before booking.

Frequently asked questions

Does it rain all day in Cancun?

Rarely. Most rain comes as short tropical showers, often in the afternoon, with sunny spells in between. Tropical storms are the exception.

Is it worth doing a cenote on a rainy day?

Yes. Cenotes are sheltered and you get wet anyway. Just avoid open water during lightning.

Do ATV tours run in the rain?

Many operators run in normal rain, which makes the trails muddier. Storms or lightning can cause delays or cancellations; check with your operator.
