Cancun is warm all year, so there's no truly bad time to go. But the weather, the crowds, the price of your hotel and even the state of the beaches change a lot from month to month. Here's what to expect.
The short answer
- Best weather: roughly December to April (drier, less humid), but also the busiest and most expensive.
- Best value: late April to early June, and November, outside the main holidays.
- Cheapest but riskiest: September and October, the wettest months and the peak of hurricane season.
Cancun's seasons
Dry season (roughly November/December to April)
Sunny days, lower humidity and pleasant evenings. This is high season: North American winter holidays, Christmas, New Year and spring break (mostly March) bring crowds and higher prices. Book hotels and popular tours early.
Rainy season (roughly May/June to October)
Hot and humid, with tropical showers that are often short and come in the afternoon. Many days are still sunny. Prices drop outside the summer holidays.
Hurricane season (June 1 to November 30)
The official Atlantic hurricane season. Most years Cancun isn't directly hit, but the risk is highest around August to October. If you travel then, consider travel insurance and flexible bookings, and follow official weather warnings.
Sargassum season (roughly April to October)
Floating seaweed can wash up on Caribbean beaches, usually peaking in summer. It varies by year, week and beach; 2026 has been forecast as a heavy year. Inland activities like cenotes and the jungle aren't affected. Read our sargassum guide.

| Apr | Dry, getting hotter | High around Easter | Sargassum may start |
| May–Jun | Hot, rains begin | Lower | Good value; whale shark season begins |

| Sep–Oct | Wettest, hurricane peak | Lowest | Best deals, more risk |
| Nov | Drying out | Moderate | Sweet spot before holidays |
Best time for specific activities
- Jungle ATV and zipline tours: all year. Dry season means dust, rainy season means mud (which many people love). Mornings are cooler in summer.
- Cenotes: all year. Water clarity is great in any season, and cenotes are a good plan when the beach has sargassum.
- Chichén Itzá and ruins: the cooler months are more comfortable. In summer, go at opening time.
- Whale sharks: roughly late spring to September.
- Sea turtle nesting: roughly May to October on some beaches.
- Snorkeling and diving: best on calm-sea days, more common in the dry season.

How to save money on any date
- Avoid Christmas, New Year, Easter and spring break if you can.
- Book flights and hotels early for high season.
- Look for early-booking discounts on tours. Ours go from 10% off (same day to 14 days ahead) to 50% off (60+ days ahead), and kids 4–12 pay half.
- Travel midweek; weekend flights are often more expensive.
