Cancun can be very expensive or surprisingly affordable, depending on your choices. You don't have to give up adventures to save money; you just have to book and move around a bit smarter. Here's how.

Accommodation

  1. Travel outside peak weeks. Christmas, New Year, Easter and spring break are the most expensive. November and late April to early June are often better value.
  2. Consider downtown or Puerto Morelos. Hotels outside the Hotel Zone can cost much less, and buses connect to the beaches.
  3. Do the maths on all-inclusive. If you'll be out on excursions most days, you may pay for meals you don't eat.

Getting around

  1. Use the R-1 bus in the Hotel Zone. It's cheap, frequent and runs along the whole strip to downtown.
  2. Take ADO buses for longer trips to Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Valladolid and the airport.
  3. Agree taxi fares before getting in. Taxis in Cancun don't use meters for most trips.
  4. Choose tours with transportation included, so you don't pay separately for a taxi to the jungle.

Free and cheap things to do

  1. Public beaches are free. Playa Delfines, Playa Tortugas, Playa Langosta and others have public access.
  2. Watch the sunset over the lagoon from a public spot.
  3. Explore downtown: Parque de las Palapas, Mercado 28 and local streets.
  4. Visit El Rey ruins for a small fee.
  5. Take the regular ferry to Isla Mujeres instead of a catamaran tour, then walk or share a golf cart.
  6. Snorkel from the beach where conditions allow, with your own mask.

Food

  1. Eat where locals eat. Downtown taquerías, markets and small fondas cost a fraction of Hotel Zone restaurants.
  2. Buy water and snacks at convenience stores, not in hotel shops.
  3. Look for "comida corrida" (set lunch menus) downtown.

Excursions

  1. Book directly with operators. You skip reseller and hotel-desk commissions.
  2. Book early. Some operators offer real early-booking discounts. Ours are 10% off from same day to 14 days ahead, 15% off with 15+ days, 25% off with 30+ days and 50% off with 60+ days. Kids 4–12 pay half the adult price.
  3. Pick one combo instead of three separate tours. An ATV + zipline + cenote day costs less than booking each activity separately. Our Mayan Pass is designed as the budget option, with a regular price of $59.
  4. Check the total price. Include entrance fees, lockers, photos and tips before comparing. Our ATV tour cost guide shows what to look for.
