Cancun is a great base for day trips, but some popular ones mean six or more hours in a vehicle. We've sorted 12 day trips by approximate travel time from the Hotel Zone, so you can decide what's worth it.
Under an hour
1. Isla Mujeres
Travel: a short ferry ride from Puerto Juárez or the Hotel Zone. A small island with calm water at Playa Norte, golf carts, the Punta Sur viewpoint and lots of seafood restaurants. One of the easiest and most rewarding days out.
2. Puerto Morelos
Travel: around 30–40 minutes south. A low-key fishing town with a protected reef, a leaning lighthouse and a great botanical garden. See our Puerto Morelos guide.
3. Ruta de los Cenotes
Travel: around an hour to the middle of the route. Dozens of cenotes and jungle parks inland from Puerto Morelos. Perfect for a half-day adventure with ATVs, ziplines and swimming. Read the Ruta de los Cenotes guide.

One to two hours
4. Playa del Carmen
Travel: about an hour south. Quinta Avenida (5th Avenue) for shopping and restaurants, beach clubs and the ferry to Cozumel.
5. Riviera Maya parks
Travel: about an hour or more. Large parks such as Xcaret and its sister parks offer underground rivers, shows and wildlife. Full, expensive days.
6. Isla Contoy
Travel: by boat via Isla Mujeres. A protected bird sanctuary with limited daily visitors. Quiet and wild.
Around two hours
7. Tulum
Travel: about two hours south. Mayan ruins on a cliff above the sea, plus beaches and cenotes nearby. Go early; the site gets hot and busy.
8. Cobá
Travel: around two hours. Jungle ruins spread over a large area, often explored by bicycle. Pair with Tulum or a cenote.
9. Valladolid
Travel: around two hours west. A colourful colonial town with cenotes like Zací in the centre and Suytun nearby. A great lunch stop on the way back from Chichén Itzá.
10. Cozumel
Travel: about an hour to Playa del Carmen, then a ferry. World-famous for diving and snorkeling. Better as an overnight trip if you want to dive properly.
Two and a half hours or more
11. Chichén Itzá
Travel: around two and a half hours. One of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Go early, wear a hat and drink lots of water. Most tours combine it with a cenote like Ik Kil and a stop in Valladolid. You can't climb the main pyramid.
12. Holbox
Travel: around two hours to the port of Chiquilá, then a ferry. A car-free island with sandbars and sunsets. Possible as a day trip, but much better with at least one night.

Tips for day trips
- Limit long trips to one or two per week. Back-to-back 12-hour days are exhausting.
- Leave early to beat heat and crowds at ruins and famous cenotes.
- Carry cash in pesos for entrance fees, parking and small shops.
- Check the season. Whale sharks are roughly late spring to September; hurricane season runs June to November.
- Pay attention to what's included on organised tours: entrance fees, lunch and drinks.
