Cancun is often sold as a resort destination, but some of the best things to do are a short boat ride or an hour's drive away. We've grouped 25 ideas by area so you can build days that make sense on a map, not just a list.
In the Hotel Zone
1. Pick the right beach for the day
The Hotel Zone has two very different coasts. The north-facing beaches on the bay side (like Playa Langosta, Playa Tortugas and Playa Caracol) usually have calmer water, good for kids and swimming. The east-facing beaches (like Playa Delfines) are the classic turquoise-and-waves postcard, but the sea can be rough. Always check the beach flag.
2. Watch the sunset over the lagoon
Cancun's sea faces east, so sunsets happen over the Nichupté Lagoon on the other side of the Hotel Zone. Head to a lagoon-side restaurant or bar in the late afternoon.
3. Visit the Museo Maya de Cancún and San Miguelito
A modern museum with Mayan artefacts and a small archaeological site in the gardens. A good first introduction before visiting bigger ruins, and an excellent plan on a rainy day.
4. See El Rey ruins
A small Mayan site in the middle of the Hotel Zone, famous for the iguanas sunbathing on the stones. Quick, cheap and easy to combine with a beach afternoon.
5. Snorkel or dive at MUSA
The underwater museum has hundreds of sculptures on the sea floor between Cancun and Isla Mujeres. Shallow sections can be snorkeled; deeper ones need diving.
6. Take a lagoon "jungle tour"
Speedboats or jet skis through the mangrove channels of the Nichupté Lagoon, often with a snorkel stop on the reef. Fun and fast, but not a real jungle.
7. See a show at Coco Bongo
Cancun's most famous nightlife venue mixes a club with acrobatics and live performances. Book ahead in high season.
Downtown Cancun
8. Eat at Mercado 28 and Parque de las Palapas
Downtown is where locals eat. Mercado 28 has souvenirs and simple restaurants; Parque de las Palapas has street food stalls in the evening.
9. Ride the R-1 bus
The public bus that runs along the Hotel Zone is cheap and frequent. It's the easiest way to beach-hop without taxis.
On the water
10. Spend a day on Isla Mujeres
A ferry ride from Cancun gets you to a small island with calm beaches (Playa Norte is the famous one), golf carts and seafood. One of the best-value days of any trip.
11. Sail on a catamaran
Many catamaran trips to Isla Mujeres include snorkeling, lunch and drinks. Great for couples and groups.
12. Swim with whale sharks (in season)
Roughly from late spring to September, tours from Cancun and Isla Mujeres go out to see whale sharks feeding offshore. It's a long boat day; choose operators that follow the rules for distance and group size.
13. Visit Isla Contoy
A protected bird sanctuary north of Isla Mujeres with a limited number of visitors per day. Quiet, wild and very different from Cancun.
In the jungle (about an hour away)

14. Ride an ATV through the jungle
The trails along the Ruta de los Cenotes near Puerto Morelos are the closest real jungle to Cancun. Our complete ATV guide explains how these tours work.
15. Fly on a zipline
Jungle zipline circuits give you a view over the treetops, often combined with ATV and cenote. See our zipline guide.
16. Swim in a cenote
Natural freshwater sinkholes, clear and cool. The closest are on the Ruta de los Cenotes. Start with our 15 best cenotes near Cancun.
17. Go horseback riding
A slow, shaded ride on jungle trails, good for beginners. Read our horseback riding guide.
18. Explore Puerto Morelos
A relaxed fishing town with a protected reef, a leaning lighthouse and great seafood. See things to do in Puerto Morelos.
Day trips
19. Chichén Itzá
One of the New Seven Wonders of the World, around two and a half hours away. Go early to avoid heat and crowds.
20. Valladolid
A colourful colonial town with cenotes in and around it. Often combined with Chichén Itzá.
21. Tulum ruins and beach
Mayan ruins above the sea, about two hours south. Pair with a cenote.
22. Holbox
A car-free island with sandbars and sunsets. Better as an overnight trip than a day trip.
23. Xcaret and the Riviera Maya parks
Large parks with shows, underground rivers and activities. Expensive but full days of entertainment.

Food and culture
24. Try a tequila tasting
Learn the difference between blanco, reposado and añejo instead of just doing shots. Many jungle tours, including ours, include one.
25. Eat cochinita pibil and fresh ceviche
Cochinita pibil (slow-cooked achiote pork) is a Yucatán classic. On the coast, look for fresh ceviche and fish tacos.

How to fit it all in
You won't do all 25. A good balance for a week is two beach days, one island day, one jungle day, one ruins day and a couple of free days. Our 7-day Cancun itinerary shows one way to organise it.
