Online, most Cancun ATV tours look the same: a red quad, a smiling couple, a turquoise cenote. The real differences show up in the small print and on the trail. We run one of these parks, so here are the questions we'd ask if we were booking someone else's tour.
1. Where exactly is the park?
"Cancun ATV tour" can mean a park 50 minutes away or two hours away. Look for the actual location, not just "Riviera Maya". Parks on the Ruta de los Cenotes near Puerto Morelos are usually the closest jungle option to the Hotel Zone. A shorter transfer means more time riding and less time in a van.
2. Is the ATV single or shared?
The cheapest headline prices are often for a shared ATV (two people per machine). If you want to drive yourself the whole time, check the price for a single ATV. All of our ATV tours include a 30-minute individual ride.
3. How long is the actual ride?
A "4-hour tour" might include 20 minutes of ATV or an hour. Ask how long you're on the machine, not how long the whole day is. Thirty minutes of guided trail is a good amount for most beginners; longer rides are better for people with experience.
4. What's included and what's extra?
Make a list and compare like for like:
- Transportation (and from which areas)
- Park entrance and conservation fees
- ATV insurance
- Ziplines, cenote, horseback riding
- Food: a snack, a full lunch or nothing
- Drinks: water, soft drinks, tequila tasting
- Lockers, photos, towels
A tour that's $10 cheaper but charges for the locker, the conservation fee and lunch at the park isn't cheaper.
5. Are helmets and insurance standard?
Helmets should be mandatory and included. Insurance should also be included in the price, not sold as an add-on at check-in. If a listing doesn't mention it, ask.

6. How big are the groups?
Big groups mean more waiting at each activity and a slower ride (the line moves at the pace of the slowest driver). Ask how many people usually ride together. If you want total control over the pace, look at a private tour.
7. What are the age and weight rules?
Each operator sets its own rules for children and for ziplines and horses. Check them before you pay, especially if you're travelling with kids or larger adults. Ours are explained in weight limits and age requirements.
8. What do recent reviews say about the guides?
Skip the star average and read the latest reviews. Look for comments about the guides' attention, the safety briefing, punctuality of the pickup and whether the day felt rushed. Photos from guests are more reliable than marketing photos.
9. What's the cancellation and weather policy?
Tours run in light rain (the jungle is used to it), but you should know what happens with storms, hurricanes or a missed pickup. Read the cancellation window before booking, especially if you book far ahead to get a discount.
10. Is booking early cheaper?
Some operators reward planning ahead. Ours works like this: 10% off the regular price from same day to 14 days ahead, 15% off with 15+ days, 25% off with 30+ days and 50% off with 60+ days, plus kids 4–12 at half the adult price. Compare the price for your actual travel date, not just the "from" price.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best ATV tour in Cancun?
There isn't one best tour for everyone. A couple who wants to drive should prioritise single ATVs and a longer ride; a family should look at age rules and shared ATVs; a budget traveller should compare total cost including extras. Use the checklist above to compare.
Should I book my ATV tour through my hotel?
You can, but hotel desks usually add a commission. Booking directly with the operator is often cheaper and lets you ask questions about pickup, age rules and inclusions.
Are online ATV tour prices per person or per ATV?
Usually per person. Shared ATV prices are per person sharing a machine. Always check before paying.
