There are hundreds of excursions sold in Cancun, and many of them look the same in the brochure. The trick isn't finding "the best tour" but matching each excursion to the kind of day you want. Here's how we'd think about it.
The five types of excursions
1. Sea and islands
- Isla Mujeres catamaran: sailing, snorkeling, lunch and drinks. The classic group day.
- Snorkeling tours: the reef and the MUSA underwater museum.
- Whale shark tours: seasonal, roughly late spring to September. A long day at sea.
- Isla Contoy: a protected bird island with limited visitors.
Best for: beach lovers, couples, groups. Watch for: sea conditions, open-bar boats if you want a quiet day.
2. Mayan ruins
- Chichén Itzá: the big one, often combined with a cenote and Valladolid.
- Tulum: ruins above the sea, about two hours south.
- Cobá and Ek Balam: jungle ruins, quieter than Chichén Itzá.
Best for: history and culture. Watch for: very early starts and long bus rides. Read our day trips from Cancun.
3. Jungle adventure
- ATV tours on jungle trails
- Ziplines and suspension bridges
- Cenote swims
- Horseback riding
Most jungle adventures near Cancun are on the Ruta de los Cenotes near Puerto Morelos, about an hour away, and they take half a day. Best for: couples, friends, active families. See our complete ATV guide.

4. Theme and eco-parks
Large parks in the Riviera Maya with underground rivers, shows, wildlife and buffets. Best for: families who want a full organised day. Watch for: high prices and a long day.
5. Food, culture and nightlife
Cooking classes, tequila and mezcal tastings, downtown food tours, Coco Bongo. Best for: evenings and rainy days.
How to choose: three questions
- How much time do you want in a vehicle? Half-day excursions within an hour (Isla Mujeres, the Ruta de los Cenotes) leave the rest of the day free. Chichén Itzá or Holbox take the whole day.
- Who's coming? Kids, older travellers and non-swimmers change everything. Check age, weight and swimming requirements.
- What do you want to remember? Pick one sea day, one culture day and one adventure day rather than three of the same.
Booking tips that save money and stress
- Book directly with the operator when possible. Hotel desks and street vendors usually add commission.
- Compare the total price, including entrance fees, insurance, lockers, photos and tips.
- Look for early-booking discounts. Our tours, for example, are 10% off from same day to 14 days ahead and up to 50% off when you book 60+ days ahead. Kids 4–12 pay half.
- Avoid timeshare "free tour" offers. Free or very cheap excursions offered at the airport or in the street often require attending a sales presentation.
- Don't schedule excursions on arrival or departure days.
- Read recent reviews, especially comments about pickups, guides and hidden costs.
A balanced excursion plan for a week
| Day | Excursion | Time needed |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | Isla Mujeres | Full or half day |
| 3 | Jungle: ATV + zipline + cenote | Half day |
| 4 | Chichén Itzá + Valladolid + cenote | Full day |
| 6 | Snorkeling or a beach club | Half day |
The rest is beach and pool time. You can see a full version in our 7-day Cancun itinerary.
