If lying by the pool isn't your idea of a holiday, Cancun has more adventure options than most beach destinations. The sea, the reef, the jungle and the cenotes are all within an hour or two. Here are the best outdoor activities, with an honest idea of how demanding each one is.
On land: the jungle
The nearest jungle to Cancun is along the Ruta de los Cenotes near Puerto Morelos, around an hour from the Hotel Zone. That's where most adventure parks are, including ours.
ATV tours
Drive an all-terrain vehicle on dirt and rock trails through the jungle. Difficulty: easy to moderate; no experience needed. Read our complete ATV guide.
Ziplines and suspension bridges
Fly between platforms in the canopy. Difficulty: easy physically, mentally challenging for some people. See our zipline guide.
Horseback riding
Slow, guided rides on shaded trails. Difficulty: easy. See our horseback riding guide.
Jungle hiking and birdwatching
The botanical garden near Puerto Morelos has marked trails through protected forest, and early mornings are best for birds.

In fresh water: cenotes
Cenote swimming and jumping
Many open cenotes have platforms or ledges for jumping. Difficulty: easy with a life jacket; jumps are optional. Our list of 15 cenotes near Cancun helps you choose.
Cenote snorkeling and cavern diving
Semi-open and cave cenotes south of Playa del Carmen are world-famous for clear water and rock formations. Cavern and cave diving require certification and specialised guides.
In the sea
Snorkeling and diving
The reef off Cancun, Isla Mujeres and Puerto Morelos is part of the Mesoamerican Reef. The MUSA underwater museum adds sculptures to the mix. Puerto Morelos has a protected reef national park close to shore.
Kitesurfing and windsurfing
Windy months make the bay side of Cancun and Isla Blanca, north of the city, popular with kitesurfers. Take lessons with a certified school.
Whale shark tours (seasonal)
Roughly late spring to September, boats from Cancun and Isla Mujeres take snorkelers out to swim near whale sharks. Difficulty: moderate; long boat ride, open water.
Parasailing and jet skis
Available on Hotel Zone beaches. Fun, quick and easy to book on the spot, but check the operator's safety gear.
Combining activities
The easiest way to try several adventures in one day is a combo tour. Ours combine a 30-minute individual ATV ride, a 4-zipline circuit, a cenote swim and, on some tours, 30 minutes of horseback riding and a tequila tasting, with hotel pickup included. Compare them on our ATV tours page.
